Young Americans is a furniture collection designed around a stem and base system. A single wire-frame base unit accepts a range of interchangeable stemmed accessories that when joined, become a complete object or piece of furniture.

This collection explores ideas of modularity and mid-century form through a contemporary lens. The current series consists of a lamp, stool, and table. These accessories are not definitive but rather, a curated set illustrating the potential within the functional relationship.

99 is a multi-use dresser designed by Lydia Cambron and Von Tundra. By combining three basic storage conditions, 99 supports daily dressing and clothing storage while accommodating both organized and messy scenarios. In addition to expanding the role of a traditional dresser its components afford many more household storage needs, ranging from personal to social use.

Hex Lights

Six tapered and bent panels hang from a free-floating hexagonal socket plate, allowing the shade to articulate and set off-kilter. Panels are joined by evident welds, creating organic breaks that define austere planes–offering a sense of the individual within the rigors of calculated geometry.

Canteen

Canteen is a juice and smoothie bar located in the heart of Southeast Portland, Oregon. Beginning in 2010, we worked with client, Brian Heck on a project involving the transformation of a 1969 Dodge Chinook into Sip Mobile Lodge, a recreational vehicle turned juice and smoothie bar. One year later, we were tasked by the same client to expand our approach of efficient, thoughtful food cart design into a small brick and mortar location. Our goal was to appropriate the language of mobility and the unique, often formless, nature of the street food experience into a more established framework.

Traditional Shaker peg rails were co-opted in the service of modular boxes, magazine racks, and hanging candleholders.

Our friends Zack Branch and Josh Wheat were given free-reign over the bathroom. Wildness was encouraged as a means to break with the clean-lines and careful craft throughout the rest of the space.

White Oak, marble, canvas, and steel, along with other long-lasting materials were selected in support of Canteen’s focus on classic, simple ingredients arranged in a pleasingly straight forward manner.

Space Post

Space Post was a sculptural encampment in the high desert outside of Joshua Tree, CA. Scaffolding, emergency blankets, and a lot of duct tape kept us covered and kind of cozy for a week long experiment in rustic living. Inspired, in part, by the triple-all-nighter delivery of an earlier project (see: High Desert Brunch Club), during which we lived and slept in a U-haul cargo space at 80 mph. We were moved to reproduce its form in a more direct and gritty manner–possibly evoking something more directly related to the feel of it, rather than its smooth-surfaced appearance.

Note the subwoofer underneath the deck.

The whole week culminated in a sequenced performance of sound and light by our friends TJ O’Neil, E*Rock, Tyler Held, and Lisa Schonberg.

Complete tear down and rebuild of a 1969 Dodge Chinook transformed a road weary beater into an elegant purveyor of fresh juices, smoothies, and late night cocktails.
